BioCanon biography:
Dr. LISA CUDDY is the Dean of Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. She was born May 3rd, 1963 in Boston, Massachusetts, to a middle-class Jewish family. The eldest of three sisters, she was raised by her mother and father, David and Rachel Cuddy.
Cuddy knew she wanted to be a doctor from the age of 12. She began her studies at Michigan University in 1981 -- according to canon, she attended Michigan when Dr. GREGORY HOUSE was in Michigan’s Graduate Programme. She graduated in 1988 at the age of 25, and began her year’s worth of mandatory medical practice at a teaching hospital -- none other than Princeton-Plainsboro, where she worked her way up the ranks and landed position of Dean of Medicine in 1995, at the age of 32. She greatly prides herself on being the second-youngest to ever become Dean of Medicine in the country, more importantly the first female. There are three female Chiefs of Medicine in major hospitals in the entire country.
In 1997, she hired the infamous Dr. GREGORY HOUSE to work at PPTH, where she found herself in constant conflict with him from that day forward. While she finds his methodology and ethical practices highly dubious, she has great respect for him as a doctor. She deliberately sets aside $50,000 worth of the hospital’s entire budget per annum in legal costs specifically for him, in the event that he lands himself into a medical lawsuit that would otherwise potentially financially ruin PPTH. Though she is usually never willing to admit it, she knows that House is much more intelligent than her, and respects him for that -- though her female wiles never prevent her from standing up to him, regardless.
Though she is typically very legalistic about how she runs PPTH and her approach to medicine as a whole, she is also a highly compassionate woman with a great deal of drive for ambition, structure and fairness. While she strives to do what is beneficially best for the hospital, she often finds herself coming into inner conflict between what is ethically right and what is morally right. Though most -- if not all -- the choices she has to make on the hospital’s behalf are heavily focused on financial benefit more than anything else, she is able to see beyond financial gain -- human life is more important than money’s worth alone.
In the fall of 2002, her father passed away, due to a sudden massive coronary. Lisa took some leave off work to head home to Boston to spend some time with her mother and sisters, two weeks in total.
Outside of PPTH, she is heavily into recreational activities, such as yoga, playing golf and jogging to keep herself fit. She's a vegetarian, and she makes certain to not own or buy any products that contain animal effects, such as leather. She makes a very strong point of keeping her personal and work life separate.
